The findings of this study can be used as evidence base to improve the knowledge of the effectiveness of recycling capabilities of textile waste. This study wants to substantiate the understanding of the existing technologies industrially applied or at research stage, which relate to all the different types of recycling (e.g. mechanical recycling, chemical monomer recycling, chemical polymer recycling, etc.). It also provides an analysis of the economic and environmental effectiveness of those recycling technologies and a roadmap of the textile recycling technologies under development in order to support their industrial uptake.

Finally, it also provides an analysis on relevant policy initiatives in order to tackle potential regulatory barriers and scale up textile waste recycling activities in the EU.

The RMG industry, which accounts for approximately 80% of Bangladesh’s total exports, is a major contributor to the country’s economic advancement. As the coronavirus12 spread across the world in early 2020 and a lockdown in Bangladesh became inevitable, businesses were forced to respond quickly to the evolving situation. This report seeks to capture the responses of global brands and the subsequent effects on workers in the immediate aftermath. The report is drawn from indepth interviews with international brands, Bangladeshi suppliers, representatives of the international civil society, and Bangladeshi labour activists. It seeks to understand the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the industry and the workers. It proposes changes to policies and practices that can lead to long-term changes that would benefit global retailers, suppliers, and workers.

This project assesses the impacts of COVID-19 pandemic and the partial withdrawal of the European Union’s Everything but Arms trade arrangement on the employment in Cambodia’s garment sector. These trade related shocks or disruptions are analyzed in the political context of Cambodia’s authoritarian shift , as the country has no functioning political opposition and independent trade unions ability to promote workers’ rights has been compromised. As for the economic context, the report looks at Cambodia’s foothold in the global garment industry , which remains as an assembly platform of low value added apparel. The research addresses this de-facto market specialization and the implications when considering changes in power dynamics between global buyers and manufacturers who are consolidating and transnationalizing their production networks.

As global brands continue their relentless quest for low-cost production locations, Ethiopia is emerging as a coveted destination. This report presents the results of an investigation of the labor rights environment in Ethiopia’s growing textile and apparel export sector. The investigation included in-depth interviews with garment workers at four export factories producing for leading brands. It reveals wages that are lower, by a substantial margin, than those in any other significant exporting country and grim working conditions that bear little resemblance to the standards the brands claim to be upholding in their supply chains.

This study is focused on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent nationwide lockdowns on workers employed in India’s leather production and footwear manufacturing industry, specifically in the Vellore region of Tamil Nadu.

The Covid-19 crisis and the nationwide lockdown have had a devastating impact on the vast majority of workers in the leather production and footwear manufacturing industry. More than half of all workers interviewed for this study reported that they had not earned any income during the period of intense lockdown. Almost all respondents reported a reduction in their household income.

The study also pointed to a stark gender pay gap in the leather and footwear industry in the prelockdown period.

Mit dieser Kurzstudie wird die aktuelle Situation der Arbeiter*innen der Schuh- und Lederindustrie beleuchtet. Grundlage sind die Erhebungen der indischen Organisationen CIVIDEP und Society for Labour and Development (SLD), die im Sommer 2020 in den Regionen um Vellore im Bundesstaat Tamil Nadu und um Kanpur im Bundesstaat Uttar Pradesh durchgeführt wurden. 1115 Arbeiter*innen gaben ausführlich Auskunft über ihre Arbeitssituation und über die Auswirkungen der Covid- 19-Pandemie auf ihre Existenzgrundlage.

This article assesses the impact of the crisis on sourcing operations and spotlights the steps that companies are taking in their immediate response. Then the strategies—and the paradigm shift—that will be necessary to reshape sourcing practices moving forward are pivoted. Two key objectives for this long-term transformation are suggested: a demand-driven supply-chain model and sustainable sourcing. It is emphasized that, for every fashion close collaboration at all levels along the value chain is required.

It was conducted a largescale survey among sourcing executives and a broader group of stakeholders—asking both how companies can respond to the crisis now and how they envision the future of the industry. The survey, conducted between April 14 and April 22, 2020, engaged 116 sourcing executives from fashion retailers and brands predominantly in North America and Western Europe; between them they manage more than $120 billion in sourcing value. Insights from more than 230 other Sourcing Journal subscribers are included, who are stakeholders across the value chain, including suppliers, agents, and academics. The survey was conducted in collaboration with the Sourcing Journal. These sourcing executives and stakeholders make clear that, beyond immediate crisis management, the industry needs to shift towards a more sustainable and demand-centric future.
